Genetic Testing Can Show Risk For Developing Cancer

2/5/2008 · Kategori: Vaginal Cancer

Kelli Cundith didn't expect to find anything. She was 30 years old, after all. It was the first time Cundith had done a self-exam. But the lump in her breast was unmistakable. Cundith opted for a lumpectomy and six months of chemotherapy at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, which was followed by seven weeks of radiation in Dothan. She also underwent genetic testing to determine if her cancer may have been inherited. Genetic testing can show if someone is a carrier for mutated genes linked to certain cancers, such as breast, ovarian or colon. Cundith was positive for the mutated BRCA2 (short for breast cancer 2) gene, which increases the risk for breast and other types of cancer. 'To me, knowing your...

2/5/2008 · Kategori: Vaginal Cancer

BARCELONA, Spain -- Five-year follow-up overall survival data from the X-ACT (Xeloda in Adjuvant Colon Cancer Trial) study show that oral chemotherapy Xeloda(R) (capecitabine) is as effective as the current standard treatment - intravenous bolus 5-FU/LV (5-fluorouracil leucovorin) - in the adjuvant treatment of Dukes' C colon cancer. These data were presented today at the 14th European Cancer Conference (ECCO) in Barcelona, Spain. Results show five-year overall survival rates for Xeloda at 71.4 percent compared to 68.4 percent in the 5-FU/LV arm. Additional data presented at the meeting from a previous analysis show that Xeloda is also comparable to 5- FU/LV with respect to disease-free survival (DFS) and relapse-free s...

WATSONVILLE -- Strawberries are not only delicious and nutrient-rich, new research from Harvard Medical School found that they may offer cardiovascular disease protection. The new study found that those who reported eating the most strawberries experienced lower blood levels of C-reactive protein, a biomarker for inflammation in the blood vessels. Howard Sesso, ScD and colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health reported their findings in the August issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Using dietary intake records of approximately 27,000 of the women who participated in the decade-long Women's Health Study, Sesso looked at levels of strawberry consumption and several risk factors for cardiovasc...

2/5/2008 · Kategori: Vaginal Cancer

EAGAN, Minn. -- Biothera announced today that it has initiated enrollment of patients in a phase Ib/IIa clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Imprime PGG(TM) and Erbitux(R) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Imprime PGG is a unique biological response modifier that enhances specific innate immune cell responses without inducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Erbitux (cetuximab) is a monoclonal antibody from ImClone Systems that is approved for treatment of colorectal and head and neck cancer. Numerous xenograft mouse models have demonstrated that combining Imprime PGG and Erbitux or other anti-tumor monoclonal antibodies, including Avastin(R) (bevacizumab), and Herceptin(R) (trastuzumab), signi...
